A 31-year-old Monroe man was transported to Piedmont Athens Regional with minor injuries when he was hit by an 18-wheeler while crossing Ga. 81 in Walton County Wednesday evening.
According to Trooper First Class Cal Barton with Georgia State Patrol, the accident happened at 6:17 p.m. at the intersection of Ga. 81 and Youth Jersey Road.
“The vehicle was a 2005 freight liner, a Suwanne Lumber truck, driven by Robbielee Damons, 53, from Winder. The pedestrian is Daniel Gardner, 31, of Monroe,” Barton said. “The vehicle was traveling north of Ga. 81 and the pedestrian was trying to cross 81 – east to west. He was wearing dark clothes and there is no lighting at that intersection. He was struck with the front of the vehicle.”
Barton said, according to the report, the driver saw him and began to slow down. The pedestrian tried to run across the road at the last second and was struck by the 18-wheeler.
“There is no crosswalk at that intersection. I don’t believe there will be any citations in this case,” Barton said. “The pedestrian was transported to the hospital by EMS with minor injuries.”
