Loganville High School and George Walton Academy are the only two Walton County high school football teams that remain in the hunt for a state championship. Both teams are heading out of town Friday as they enter Round 2 of the 2016 Georgia High School Association Football Championships. The community is urged to put out signs and support the players as they attempt to bring home the titles.
After beating Riverwood 24-10 at home last week in the first round of the Georgia High School Football playoffs, Loganville High School’s football team heads to Waycross Friday for Round 2. Last week’s win was the first time the Loganville Red Devils have had a playoff victory in 25 years. Ranked No. 9 in Class AAAAA, the Red Devils take on No. 6 ranked Ware County Gators. The Gators beat Ola 35-28 in the first round last week. The winner of this game goes on to play in the quarterfinals on Nov. 25 against the winner of the Rome vs Bainbridge game. The George Walton Academy Bulldogs beat Mt. Vernon Presbyterian in the first game of the playoffs 38-14 last week. The Bulldogs travel to Roswell to take on the Fellowship Christian Paladins the in Round 2 of the playoffs. Fellowship Christian had a bye in Round 1. According to GHSF Association, the GWA Bulldogs reached the semifinals in the state football championships in 2012, but have not returned to the playoffs since then. The winner in this second round play will head to the quarterfinals on Nov. 25 to take on the winner of Fridays game between Athens Academy and Mt. Paren Christian.
