Walton County Veterans Memorial has set a date for the 2016 Groundbreaking Ceremony of the Fallen Heroes Garden. It is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 2, 2016 on the memorial grounds in front of the Walton County Government Building, 303 South Hammond Drive, Suite 330, Monroe.
The public is invited to attend. This is the first phase of the Walton County Veterans Memorial. The hope is that the dedication of the Fallen Heroes Garden will be able to take place by November this year and the Veterans Memorial to be completed in its entirety next year.
Sgt. Dennis Walters, a United States Marine Corps veteran, has been involved with helping raise funds for the Memorial.
“It has been a long road however, we are very thankful for the progress thus far,” Walters said, going on to thank the community for its continued support of the memorial.
There will continue to be opportunities to donate to the memorial. Until the end of August 2016, there is an Official Gun Raffle and the winning ticket will be drawn at the Groundbreaking for a Springfield Armory 1911, stainless steel .45 caliber handgun. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased from any of the volunteers (you must be 21 years of age or older and must be able to legally purchase a gun in the State of Georgia). All the proceeds benefits the Fallen Heroes Garden. The volunteers can be found at various events around town, including the Monroe Farmers Market on Saturday mornings.
Another opportunity to contribute is at the Lt. Helton Memorial Foundation, Inc for the 2016 Don’t Be A Weaksauce Golf Classic. It will be held on Sept. 9, 2016 at the Monroe Golf & Country Club. Deadline for registration is Sept. 6, 2016 and is limited to 16 teams. Donors and sponsors of all levels are needed. Again, all proceeds will benefit the WCVM – Fallen Heroes Memorial Garden.
