Back to school shopping – what you need to know about the sales tax holiday

Yes, it’s almost that time already – back to school preparations, shopping and, for a for a lucky few, possibly a last minute vacation.

Walton County Public Schools head back to the classrooms on Aug. 3 and Gwinnett County Public School students return a week later on Aug. 8. Social Circle City Schools go back on Aug. 5, George Walton Academy, Loganville Christian Academy and Bethlehem Christian Academy students all head back to the classrooms on Aug. 9.

If you were planning a big back-to-school shopping spree this weekend, maybe hold off for a couple more weeks. The 2016 tax-free period for clothing and school supplies is July 30 and 31. The sales tax exemption only applies to certain items. Clothing (including footwear) with a sales price of $100.00 or less per item can be purchased without paying sales tax on those two days. The exemption, however, does not include clothing accessories such as jewelry, handbags, umbrellas, eyewear, watches, and watchbands. School supplies purchased for noncommercial use with a sales price of $20.00 or less per item are also included as well as computers, computer components, and prewritten software purchased for noncommercial home or personal use with a sales price of $1000 or less per item.

Click on this link for all exempt items and clarification on which items will have sales tax added, even over the exempt days.
