And the rockets’ red glare, the bombs bursting in air…Gave PROOF through the night that our flag was still there.
When writing the Declaration of Independence, our founders recognized our God given rights when they said that all men are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights. Our founders recognized that these rights already existed and the role of government is to secure those rights, not hand them down from fallible men. If the state can create and give us our rights, it can also take them away. And the government must derive just powers from the consent of the governed. And when the government becomes destructive to the rights they were put in place to secure, the people have the right to bear arms in defense of and preservation of those freedoms – hence independence from England. That’s what separates us from all other governments and why our freedom is so precious.
As my girls stood out there looking up for something to happen, I looked at the wonder in their eyes and thought how thankful I am that our forefathers had the courage to secure “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” for future generations. And watching them as they benefit and enjoy their freedom, makes me really, really happy.
