Revised Animal Ordinance on Walton County BOC Agenda

The Walton County Board of Commissioners will have their August regular meeting at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2014 at the Historic Courthouse in Downtown Monroe. Last month, the BOC moved into their new offices in the Courthouse downtown.

There will be the first reading of a revised Animal Control Ordinance. Earlier in the year, animal activists had asked commissioners to consider a tethering ban similar to the one instituted by the City of Monroe. However, that is not being addressed, at least not at this time according to Walton County Animal Control Director Bill Wise. He said the changes are related to changes to requirements in the dangerous dog classification.

“The cases will be able to be heard in Probate Court now and also we have tightened some of the other requirements for a dangerous dog – that is once a dog has bitten a person or another animal,” Wise said, adding these included requirements for spay and neuter and possible microchipping. “There will be a first reading on Tuesday and then it will be under review for a month and then adopted next month.”
